A Data Deep Dive: E. coli risk in drinking water (2021-2025)
Between 2021 and 2025, hundreds of thousands of E. coli tests were collected through mWater. We've aggregated tens of thousands of publicly shared results to see what the data shows. Hundreds of thousands more have been collected and kept private by the users collecting them.
Two things stand out:
Detection rates climbed sharply from 2021 to 2025. This isn't isolated contamination. It's a persistent reality across contexts, which is why consistent testing matters.
When E. coli is detected, most results fall into intermediate and high-risk categories (nearly 70% combined). Viewing contamination through a risk lens helps prioritize where action is most urgent.
You can collect water quality data like this too, all for free in mWater. E. coli or any other parameter. Design your surveys, collect results in the field, and visualize findings in real-time.
