The USAID Indonesia Urban Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Penyehatan Lingkungan untuk Semua (IUWASH PLUS) project is an initiative designed to assist the Government of Indonesia in increasing access to water supply and sanitation services as well as improving key hygiene behaviors among urban poor and vulnerable populations. It works with 35 local governments across Indonesia to increase access to improved water supplies and safely managed sanitation. mWater is the key data management platform used as part of this work.

mWater has been used as the main data collection platform for the IUWASH work for a variety of use cases in order to meet the project targets. This has included a number of trainings across the country to upskill partners, who’ve then been able to use mWater for the project work, and go on to design surveys for their other work.

Switching from manual data collection brought many benefits: Much easier and faster reviewing of the collected data, geographically located and mappable data, and the inclusion of photographs.

As a result, mWater has been instrumental in collecting data at scale for IUWASH work, including data relating to beneficiary selection, customer satisfaction, and demand analysis. The use of mWater continues strong in Indonesia, and many partners have adopted mWater into creating their own surveys for other ongoing work.

“mWater really helps Dinas Perkim to collect complete and accurate data on RTLH. This kind of data is very crucial to solve slum problems,” Heru Herdiansyah, the Head of Settlements Quality Improvement Section of Dinas Perkim in Tangerang district, explained.
