Do mWater apps work offline?

mWater apps work on and offline. You have to be online the first time you open the app and login. When you use the app offline, your sites and surveys will not sync to the cloud until you are online again. It is very important to open the app when you have data service or wifi and sync your data once or twice a day during data collection.

Caching map tiles for offline work. The map is the only part of the app with limited function while offline. Unless you store map views in advance, you will not be able to use the map for navigation if you do not have data service or wifi. GPS will still be fully functional. When possible, in advance of working offline, cache your map view of the region you will be in. Do this by opening the map in the app, pressing the top right gear symbol, and choosing "make available offline". This will make the current view of the map you have navigated to see available when you are offline.

GPS use in mWater

Does GPS work when the mobile phone or tablet is offline? Yes. In Android devices, GPS does not require a cell signal to work. See below for how to maximize your device's GPS accuracy.

Can my data be private?

mWater has the capacity to collect data that is private and secure, but we strongly recommend against keeping data private unless safety or stigma is a risk. UNICEF, USAID, World Bank and other industry leaders have also made this adjustment, to put the burden of proof on why data should be private rather than public. The people and governments in the places we work will never have a chance to take over or take part in management of water and sanitation projects if their M&E is silo’d. Silos happen most commonly when data is collected on paper and stored in files, but silos also occur when data is kept private and not shared.

mWater is built for sharing, and especially for collaboration between organizations and local stakeholders. We have thousands of local governments, NGOs, communities, and researchers using mWater around the world and we’re proud that most of these users make their data public. Chances are good that if you do, too, you can identify more opportunities for local collaboration.

We offer three data permission levels you can choose from: private data that is only viewable by you or your group, protected data in which certain fields can be seen but not changed by anyone in the world (name, location, etc) but other updates like water quality and functionality can be made by anyone, and public where anyone can edit and update the point. We also offer the ability to translate private, survey-collected data into publicly-sharable, anonymized indicators. In this way, even private household water points’ status can be shared as district-level indicators—and that’s just one example.

User names should be personally identifying, like first initial and last name. Avoid user names like "enumerator 1" because mWater cannot easily identify the user in the case that there is a problem.
Social sign-in is an easier and faster way to create your user name and password. It does not matter if you use either Google or Facebook. Both will be matched to your mWater account. mWater will not be able to see your account information or status updates. We will not be able to post to your accounts.
In the app and Portal, you can click on recover my password and a link will be emailed to you for resetting your password. This will only reset your mWater password, NOT the password for the Gmail or Facebook.
Some users pay for a custom view of the app with only their options and surveys visible. If you are in a group that pays for this future, you should be able to see it and choose from the list at sign-in. You can still use the app as an individual not affiliated with this group, but be sure to toggle to individual in the settings tab.
